Research: Analysing digipak conventions

Introduction: There are products that are similar that must be analysed to help us with our final music product.

Chance the rapper:
The colours of this digipak does not conform to the conventions of the hip hop as expected. The colours are not masculine. However, it is still conventional as the parental advisory logo is shown on the digipak this represents the genre of the artist as explicit content or lyrics are usually used in the genre of hip hop.

This digipak convention of chance the rapper, partly his personality and character. The state of his face looks like he's dazed in the middle of the atmosphere which looks like a forest with a spaced out sky. The colours of the sky which are purple, pink, connotes the imaginations of that he has. This is also shown with the font of the album title Acid rap. This will be marketable to the target audience of the artist. The font that the album title is written in are big enough to catch the attention of the target audience, also the font brings an imagery of getting lost in imagination.

Hopsin:

Masculine colours are used in this digipak this is what mainly makes it conventional to the hip-hop genre. Also,  in the picture  male rapper appears to be held hostage, this seems to portray violence which is another reason why this digipak conventional, the genre tends to represent violence which is obviously controversial.

This digipak looks quite controversial ,with the artist being tied up with someone standing over him. The fonts of the album title 'Knock Madness' are huge but oddly-looking with the specific style their written in.This clearly appeals to the  target audience of young teens and over, as it's representing the general feelings young teens as well as young adults have of feeling insane. This is what makes this digipak so successful as it, represents the personality of the rapper Hopsin.

Vic Mensa: This digipak is another that is very appealing to the audience. The fade that is used in this digipak is partly portraying the character of the artist, which is probably controversial like the last artist I analysed. The Font of the title is big enough to catch the attention of the buyer. An indication is given in the digipak of what themes the artist will tough on in his songs.

Conclusion: This shows the importance of digipaks in the promotion of the artist. This is what we aim to do with our digipak for our own artist.

Research-Adverts: Analysis of magazine advert conventions

Introduction: Music adverts are a crucial part of a promotion of a artist.

Purpose of the adverts:
The purpose of the magazine adverts is to provide artist and album exposure. In other words, provide a new fan base for the artist. Magazine adverts also help to build a further relationship with the audience. These adverts also leads to merchandizing promotion.

Advert conventions:
Conventions of magazine adverts is that is always contains the main image of the artist. This is so that the audience are aware of the singer or rapper of the album. This will also contain the sites where the album is available to download. Key singles of the album or mix tape are mentioned in the magazine advert. More importantly, the release date for the album so that the artists fans can know when to either buy the album or download it.

Comparable artist analysis;

Artist Representation: He is naked and have tattoos around his body. This specifically promotes one of his key singles "Kissing on my tattoos", this is emphasised in the background. He wears accessories like gold chains, gold earrings as well as a branded cap. This advert connotes the genre of hip hop/RnB. This represents the artist as a typical so called "Gangsta",

Layout: The image of the artist takes up half of the advert poster. This helps with the unique selling point as the target audience will know who he is.

Typography: Old type of writing in bold is used as the typography. This connotes that the artist views himself as music god. This increases his importance to the music fans and within the industry.

Critical information: The information contains exclusive songs that will make his album more appealing, as well as featuring other artists, which will make the album more appealing, as the featuring artists will have their own fan base, meaning that the artist will sell to a more wide audience.

The artist Image: The artist looks lustful and he is half-naked. This will have a appealing effect on the female audience as they would be swayed by the body of the artist, especially with his tattoos. This also connotes the genre of hip hop and Rnb. Furthermore, this enhances his star image as a commodity.

Lighting and colour: The overall colour of the advert is brown, making it look expensive. High key lighting is used for the artist to help make him stand out. The advert is quite old school looking as well as biblical. These colours make the music advert conventional to it's genre.

Key Information: There is clear information on the release date and availability to download with the artist name and album name. This makes the target audience aware of this making them know when to download or buy the album.

What I like about the product is mainly the style of the writing used in this music advert, to connote the genre of the artist that is being promoted. Also, I like the correlation in the advert with the image  of the artist and the typography of the information that is present.

Lighting: High-key lighting is used to present the beautiful and attractive face of the artist. It helps her look more glamour. This strongly links in with Dyer's star theory, specifically in the topic of star image and construction.

Artist representation: The advert represents the artist as seductive, mainly with the presentation of her lips and the state of her black nailed hands. This attracts a male audience to the artist with her seductive looks. This is strongly links in with Mulvey's gaze theory.

Layout: The layout mostly shows the face of the artist. This ensures that the target audience are aware and familiar of who the artist is. This is part of making the artist marketable.

Typography: Big bold fonts have been used for the name of the artist, this is to make it stand out to the audience. Smaller fonts have been used for the album name and others since they are less important. Furthermore, the letter are quite stylish especially the curl that is made from the From the first J to the last.

Colour: The colours that are used for this advert connote the glamour of the artist as well as the artist's genre  which relates to RnB. The colours are gold, black and white.

Key Information: The information that is in the advert are all fonts that will be enough for the target audience to be aware.
